It sounds like a party trick: pump smoke into the drains and watch where it comes out. But sewer smoke testing is a legitimate, widely used diagnostic — the fastest way to find cracks, open joints, and failed seals that cameras can't see from inside the pipe.

How it works

A blower introduces manufactured, non-toxic smoke into the drain-waste-vent system. The smoke follows the pipe network; wherever it escapes — from the ground above a buried line, a roof vent, a fixture, a wall cavity — there's a defect: a crack, an open joint, a failed wax ring, a dry trap. The whole test takes well under an hour for most homes.

What it finds that cameras miss

Cameras see the pipe's interior; smoke finds paths out of the system. A cracked vent stack inside a wall, a failed toilet seal, an uncapped cleanout buried in a remodel, a broken joint under a slab — smoke reveals the defects that only show themselves as escaping gas. It's particularly good at solving mystery sewer odors, where the camera shows a clean pipe but something still stinks.

The two worlds of smoke testing

Municipalities use it at scale to find inflow and infiltration in sewer mains — it's the cheapest way to survey miles of pipe. Plumbers use it at building scale for odor investigations and DWV integrity checks. Same principle, different scope.

Safety and practicalities

The smoke is manufactured for this purpose: non-toxic, non-staining, dissipates quickly. You'll be told what to expect — it can emerge from roof vents (normal), dry traps (pour water in them), or unexpected places (that's the finding). Pets and sensitive occupants get a heads-up, though the smoke itself is harmless.

Frequently asked questions

Is the smoke dangerous?

No — it's a manufactured, non-toxic smoke designed for this testing. It doesn't stain and dissipates quickly with ventilation.

Will smoke come inside my house?

It can emerge from dry traps or fixture overflows — that's actually diagnostic. We coordinate with you beforehand so nothing is a surprise.

When is smoke testing better than a camera?

For odor investigations and suspected vent-system defects — the things cameras can't see from inside the pipe. The two methods complement each other; we use both when the situation calls for it.
